Our last 3 already have Stories — What You Need To Know

Naughty Dog has not yet committed to making The Last of Us 3. But there is good news for fans eager for a sequel: the game's storyline is already pretty much set in stone, and the two lead writers of The Last of Us, Part 2 are working on a major plot idea for another game set in Sony's dark, fungus-filled post-apocalypse are being developed. The big problem, of course, is that there is no game to go along with it, and there is no guarantee that there ever will be.

The source was IGN, which noted an interesting exchange on the Script Apart podcast: on Script Apart, host Al Horner interviews screenwriters of various films. A recent episode, "The Last of Us Part II with Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross," was a bit different, as Horner and his guests discussed video game scripts instead.

First things first: the majority of the podcast is about how the script for The Last of Us, Part 2 was put together. Speculation about a sequel was only a few minutes of the 43 minutes of show time. It is interesting to note, however, that The Last of Us story does not necessarily have to end with Part 2.

"My co-writer, Halley Gross, and I wrote a story outline that we're not making, but that we hope will one day see the light of day, that explores a little bit what happens after this game.

Drachman said.

The "not making" part of this quote seems important, but only insofar as "The Last of Us 3" is not yet in production. It is highly unlikely that Drachman's current outline will become the actual story of The Last of Us 3. This is because the story of any game has to be adapted and modified to fit the gameplay, production schedule, voice actors, etc. However, it is interesting to note that Naughty Dog seems to think that there are still areas of "The Last of Us" setting that need to be explored.

"We've created two games that we feel tell the personal stories of the characters, but also tell something universal.

"I feel like if we were to make a third game, there are certain themes that we would have to stick to, both structurally and thematically.

In any case, The Last of Us 3 is unlikely to appear anytime soon; Druckmann reminded listeners that it took seven years to complete The Last of Us, Part 2, and Naughty Dog is working on something based on The Last of Us or not, and that he has yet to make a public commitment to a new project. In the meantime, fans are looking forward to The Last of Us TV series to air on HBO.
