Mass Effect Legend Edition will eat up a huge chunk of your PS5 storage

Next week marks the long-awaited release of "Mass Effect Legendary Edition," a remastered version of the original "Mass Effect" trilogy, and the storage space required by the game on PS4 and PS5 has been revealed.

@PlayStationSize revealed on Twitter that the base game has a capacity of 68 GB, and the patch required on day one will add another 12 GB, bringing the total install size to 80 GB For gamers in the EU, the game's file size will be even larger, 101 GB, but this is likely due to the additional language packs.

Thus, the storage requirements for the Mass Effect Legendary Edition are more than double that of the original release of the Mass Effect trilogy: the PS3 will have a total of 7GB for "Mass Effect" (7GB), 12GB for "Mass Effect 2" (12GB), and Mass Effect 3 (14GB) would be approximately 34GB, which is significantly less than the capacity of this remastered version.

Of course, the "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" not only includes all-new textures and lighting effects, but also includes over 40 downloadable content items. It is therefore not surprising that these refreshed editions require somewhat more hard drive space.

If hard drive space on your PS5 is already an issue, you may be relieved to know that you can store "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" on an external drive. This is because there is no next-gen native version of the game and the PS5 technically runs as a PS4 game through backwards compatibility, so there is no need to install it on the internal SSD.

However, storing the game on the PS5's SSD is worth reserving space on the hard drive if possible, as it allows users to enjoy next-generation console-specific enhancements. Earlier this week, technical details of "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" were revealed, and it has been confirmed that it will run at 4K and 60 frames per second on Sony's flagship console.

If you are concerned about being able to play the game on launch day due to its large file size, you can pre-load the game on May 12 ahead of the May 14 release date by pre-ordering it on the PlayStation Store. This allows you to jump in to save the galaxy the moment the game is released.

Meanwhile, while next week may seem very far off, Bioware has released a number of free digital content previously only available with the deluxe editions of Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. The downloadable content includes music tracks, a digital art book, and a digital comic book, which can be requested through BioWare's website.

BioWare also launched a very nifty box art creator web app that allows users to create their own custom covers featuring their favorite Mass Effect characters. Unfortunately, it is not possible to create box art that is just an image of glass.
