LG OLED TV breakthrough just fixed one of the biggest problems

OLED TVs are about to get a major upgrade with a new display technology that improves brightness by more than 20%.

Despite their many advantages, OLED TVs tend to look darker than traditional LCD sets and competing QLED displays, especially in bright environments. However, this is about to change, thanks to a breakthrough technology introduced by LG Display in its new 83-inch panel.

The change is detailed in the following YouTube video (in Korean, but with English captions). In the video, Jang Ji-hyang, a senior research engineer at LG Display, explains how improvements have been made by applying "high-efficiency light-emitting materials" and optimizing the light-emitting layers.

This resulted in a 20% increase in brightness of the new 83-inch next-generation OLED TV panels, improved color gamut and contrast, and more vivid, natural-looking images.

This new technology is especially useful when viewing HDR content, which itself relies on mix control of brightness, contrast, and color.

The only drawback is that this new brighter panel does not solve one of the major weaknesses of OLED technology, the problem of OLED burn-in. However, we will see what it can do when the LG G1 Gallery Series is released later this year. Unfortunately, we don't know how much these new TVs will cost. [Also, the ongoing global chip shortage makes it not easy to introduce new technology right now.

LG Display will be exhibiting a brighter 83-inch OLED panel at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2021 show, along with many new technologies. This will include a 48-inch "Bendable Cinematic Sound OLED," a curved screen that produces sound without the need for a separate speaker system.

Also on display will be a 0.42-inch "OLEDoS for AR" display, a 12.8-inch rollable display, and a 4-in-1 ultra-large P-OLED in-car display that combines four different displays on a single T-shaped screen.
