PS5 owners get an invitation from Sony to buy another - really

You may be struggling to get your hands on Sony's newest gaming console due to the PS5 restocking issue. It turns out that you made a grave mistake - you did not yet own a PS5 console.

While there are reports that Sony is sending PlayStation Direct invitations to current PS5 owners to let them know that they can purchase another console, that's all we can conclude. Given that many of us are struggling to secure a single console, this seems like a strange turn of events.

However, as noted on GamesRadar+, a number of commenters on Wario64 and Reddit claim to have received an invitation to purchase another PS5 via PS Direct. With this "golden ticket" they can skip the virtual line and purchase a PS5 from Sony's online store. This invitation was sent even though many of the recipients already own a PS5.

Apparently, Sony sent out a mass mailing/invitation without vetting who should or should not get one. The good news for avid fans is that those who commented with Wario64 could, in theory, buy a PS5 for a friend or family member.

That is the most ideal outcome. At the same time, PS5 owners who receive an invitation to buy a second PS5 could conceivably litter sites like Ebay with extra consoles.

Both Sony and Microsoft have struggled to restock the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, partly due to the Covid-19 craze, resulting in a booming used market. The problem is that this is driving up prices for those who have yet to acquire a new console.

Thankfully, PS Direct invitations aren't just being extended to current PS5 owners (and profit seekers). Sony is not trolling potential customers or trying to rile up longtime fans. Sony wants as many people as possible to purchase the PS5.

This PS Direct invite is most likely a mistake. Regardless, we hope that everyone who wants a PS5 will get one as soon as possible.
