LG OLED Tv just got a killer upgrade for the game

LG's OLED TVs are some of the best 4K gaming TVs available for purchase, and today, a firmware update is available for select LG OLED TVs to further improve performance.

With the release of firmware version 03.15.27, LG C1 OLED and LG G1 OLED TVs will now offer extended HDR gaming support, supporting 120Hz gaming at 4K with Dolby Vision HDR.

LG's OLED TVs are already top rated for gaming because they fully support HDMI 2.1, the latest HDMI standard offered on both Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles. With features such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM), not to mention support for 4K resolutions at frame rates up to 120Hz, these TVs offer the best gaming experience. However, today's firmware update adds a new feature.

High Dynamic Range (HDR) content uses additional data to deliver a more vibrant image, providing brighter lighting for brighter areas of the screen and darker backlighting for darker areas of the screen such as deep shadows and night skies. This effect is particularly noticeable in OLED TVs, where brightness can be controlled at the individual pixel level.

Among the various HDR formats available, Dolby has taken the lead with Dolby Vision HDR, a proprietary HDR format that provides more fine-grained lighting control and realistic images.

Previously, gaming in HDR was limited to 60 frames per second, but with LG's new firmware, Dolby Vision-enabled games can now be played at frame rates up to 120 fps. This means a smoother, more responsive gaming experience while getting best-in-class HDR capabilities.

At the time of this writing, high frame rate Dolby Vision game content is only supported on the Xbox Series X and not on the PS5; Xbox users can already take advantage of it through the Xbox Insider testing program Dolby Vision 120Hz, but the feature is expected to be rolled out to all Xbox users in the future. Sony has also promised future Dolby Vision support, but the PS5 only supports the more basic HDR10 format at this time.

LG said the new firmware will first roll out to current LG C1 OLED and LG G1 OLED TVs today, with support for more OLED and non-OLED LG TV models in July.

"Additional premium models in LG's 2021 TV lineup, including the OLED Z1 series, QNED Mini LED QNED99 series, and NanoCell NANO99 series TVs will also receive updates in July," LG said." Additional 2021 and 2020 TV models are also being tested for 60Hz or 120Hz Dolby Vision gaming."

The firmware update is free and there is no additional cost for this enhanced gaming feature; LG Smart TVs that use webOS and are set up with an Internet connection should automatically receive the update. If your TV does not receive updates, you can manually check your LG TV's settings for updated software. (For more information, see the LG TV User Guide.)

Additionally, LG OLED TVs are also compatible with Google Stadia.
