We first saw the power of Unreal Engine 5 in a PS5 tech demo last year, and these demos released by The Coalition prove that the Xbox Series X can certainly keep up with Sony's flagship console.

The Vancouver-based studio, developers of the first two games in the "Gears of War" series, has released two impressive demo reels on Twitter and YouTube. The first short video showcases advanced Unreal Engine 5 features such as Nanite, which "enables unlimited triangle budgeting," and Lumen, which "enables real-time lighting without any traditional overhead tasks." The second video The second video demonstrates the character rendering capabilities of the new version of the Unreal Engine.

If that sounds like incomprehensible technical jargon, don't worry. The key takeaway from these tech demos is that Unreal Engine 5 can be used to develop some pretty gorgeous games on the Xbox Series X. "Gears 5," released in 2019, is built on Unreal Engine 4, and the same The next game in the franchise is expected to be the first Xbox first-party game to feature the new version of the engine. [It was previously announced that Unreal Engine 5 will be used in several upcoming Microsoft-funded projects, including InXile's next-generation RPG and several projects set in the Gears of War franchise.

Sony also purchased a minority stake in Epic, the Unreal Engine 5 development team, for $250 million last summer. Therefore, this new engine technology will no doubt be used in several PS5 games. From the technical demos I have seen of the engine running on both systems, it will be very powerful on both systems.

Unfortunately, you may have to wait a while before you can play games that take full advantage of the power of Unreal Engine 5. Unreal Engine 5 is only available for Early Access this year, so developers are still learning how to take full advantage of the advancements it offers. It will likely be at least a couple of years before we see a major game developed with this engine in mind.
