The recent PS5 software beta finally allowed users to upgrade the PS5's internal storage. However, the lengthy list of specifications released by Sony has caused much online controversy over which SSDs are compatible with the console's new expansion slots.

Shortly after the beta version was distributed to some console owners, popular component maker Western Digital confirmed that the WD_Black SN850 NVMe SSD met the required specifications and was indeed compatible with the PS5. But if that wasn't enough to convince you of its compatibility, Mark Cerny, the PS5's lead system architect, took to Twitter to show off his PS5 SSD of choice.

Mark Cerny said he chose the WD_Black SN850 to improve the PS5's storage capabilities out of "several great options."

Alternative options that meet the PS5's requirements include the Samsung 980 Pro and Seagate FireCuda 530, and others. In addition to these drives, several others are currently being tested by beta testers.

The ability to upgrade the PS5's internal storage is still in beta, so it may be worth waiting to see how each option works before deciding to purchase an expensive SSD.

Of course, Cerny's recommendation carries a lot of weight. However, more real-world testing will almost certainly take place in the coming weeks before this feature is rolled out to all PS5 owners.

Whether you buy an internal SSD now in hopes of beating the duffers or plan to wait until this feature is fully tested, one thing to keep in mind is the "effective heat dissipation" requirement.

Sony strongly emphasizes the need for drives with heat sinks attached, and as we can see from Cerny's tweets, he is following that advice.

PS5 internal storage upgrades are not cheap; the WD_Black SN850 series is expensive. Even the smallest size, 500GB, costs about $140 (with heatsink). Currently, a 2TB drive with heat sink is $429, discounted another $100.

Alternatively, you can get one of the best external drives and store and transfer games as needed. It takes a little more work, but external storage is much cheaper.
