The 10 Best PlayStation Summer Sale Games to Buy

The PlayStation Summer Sale is underway. That means you have until next Wednesday (August 18) to pick up some great PS4 and PS5 titles (including the best PS5 games) at steep discounts. Of course, as with any big game sale, there are some really tempting deals, but there are also plenty of deals that will make you shrug your shoulders. Tom's Guide staff can help you separate the must-plays from the sorta-plays.

We've scrutinized the hundreds of games and DLC packs on sale during PlayStation's summer sale and narrowed it down to 10 titles that we can personally recommend. All of the games have been played and thoroughly enjoyed. I can't promise that every title will suit every reader's taste, but there should be enough variety to satisfy action lovers, RPG enthusiasts, contemplative adventure gamers, and everyone in between.

Read on to find out which of the PlayStation Summer Sale games you should buy before the August 18 expiration date.

"Assassin's Creed Valhalla" is a huge game, and it usually costs $120 to get all the playable content. However, the entire package is currently available on both PS4 and PS5 for $60. In this open-world action/adventure game, you control Avor, a Viking raider who must settle his clan in medieval England. With a vast world to explore and a number of interesting missions to complete, Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a game to lose track of time.

Just be sure to set aside a good amount of time, as you can easily play for 100 to 150 hours with all the optional content combined.

Indie developer Supergiant won a lot of praise last year for its innovative roguelike game Hades. But Hades didn't come out of thin air; Supergiant has been refining its action/RPG for years. The studio's first title, Bastion, is currently on sale for under $4 (normally $15). This colorful isometric game puts you in the role of a post-apocalyptic adventurer trying to rebuild the world with the help of a very charismatic narrator.

Packed with a killer soundtrack, impressive art style, and challenging gameplay, Bastion is a steal at its current price; other titles from Super Giant, including Transistor and Pyre, are also currently on sale.

Dead Cells is - as you may have heard before - a super difficult indie rogue-lite with a throwaway art style. While hardly a unique setting, Dead Cells sets itself apart with its balanced gameplay and surprisingly fluid animation. In this side-scrolling action game, you become an out-of-body spirit who brings corpse after corpse back to life in order to escape a massive labyrinth.

By thoroughly exploring each area, you will discover a variety of weapons and traps and upgrade your skills. Over time, permanent upgrades will also be unlocked. The game normally costs $25, but is available now for $17.

"Final Fantasy VII Remake" was one of the best games of 2020, and it's even better on PS5. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade optimizes the hit RPG for the PS5, with faster load times, improved graphics, and faster frame rates. The biggest upgrade, however, is undoubtedly the addition of the Intermission DLC.

Normally, the complete package of FF7R Intergrade, including the soundtrack and artbook, sells for $90. However, it is currently available for $60. Considering the overall quality of the game, this is a bargain. Fans of the original FF7 will want to check out this title, which offers an interesting new take on the story.

The Last of Us Part II was named the best game of 2020 by Tom's Guide. This is high praise, but well deserved. In this action/adventure/stealth game, the player becomes Ellie, the protagonist of the first game. She embarks on a cross-country journey of revenge, traversing morally gray areas in the process.

It's also a lot of fun to play, whether you're ducking through hordes of deadly infected or engaging in intense firefights with human enemies. The Last of Us Part II is normally $40, but is available this week for $30.

Statistics show that many people play "Marvel's Spider-Man" on PS4 and then leave it behind. However, the game has three substantial DLC packs, collectively known as "The City That Never Sleeps." In these refreshing expansion packs, you will team up with Spider-Man's longtime allies Black Cat and Silver Sable to take on the supervillain Hammerhead and his dangerous criminal organization.

What worked well in the base game is now available in smaller, more digestible chunks. The packs normally sell for $10 apiece, but are now available for $5 apiece.

Mega Man X was a classic side-scroller from the SNES era that lasted into the PS2 era. The Mega Man X Legacy Collection allows you to play almost the entire series on modern consoles. It is worth revisiting if you played these games in the past, and worth experiencing for the first time if you haven't.

In these futuristic tales, you control X and ZERO. androids, hunting corrupted "maverick" robots. With tons of levels to explore, bosses to fight, and secrets to find, the "Mega Man X Collection" is well worth your time. The entire collection normally costs $40, but is currently $20 ($10 for each volume).

The Jin-O Collection is not for the faint of heart. This incredibly tough action RPG draws a lot of inspiration from the "Dark Souls" series, which means that death is frequent and punishing. But at the same time, it also means that the game's skill ceiling is incredibly high, with plenty of opportunities to improve your stats, equipment, and skills.

The Nioh Collection includes "Nioh" and "Nioh 2," both set in a fantasy version of medieval Japan, where you will fight both human and demon enemies. The price is reduced this week from $70 to $50.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is not only the best Star Wars game of the current generation, it is one of the best Star Wars games ever made. You control Kal Kestis, a Jedi Padawan, as he tries to survive the deadly Jedi purge.

Featuring tight combat, an array of collectible upgrades, an unpredictable storyline, and a three-dimensional cast of characters, Jedi: Fallen Order reminds us why we first fell in love with this vast Star Wars universe. The game normally retails for $40, but is currently on sale for $20. Unfortunately, the deluxe edition is not available.

"What Remains of Edith Finch" is normally $20. Since this game takes two to three hours to complete, it may not seem like much of a bargain. But at the current price of $6, this hearty little adventure game is a bargain. You play as the protagonist, returning to your family's ancestral home in the Pacific Northwest to try to get to the bottom of your family's old curse.

"What Remains of Edith Finch" is sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, but in any case it is chock full of gameplay variety and sharp writing. There is no other game like it.
