From the moment we finished our review of the PS5, we thought that Sony would develop the PS5 Pro in the next few years and offer an even more powerful gaming console. Well, it looks like Sony may indeed do so, and the PS5 Pro is currently in development and will reportedly be released in 2023 or 2024 at the latest.

This Mind Generation information comes from a source, YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead, who speculates that Sony is trying to target 8K gaming in some form on their $600-$700 console and He speculates that Sony is trying to target 8K gaming in some form on a $600 to $700 console. And while the PS5 Pro is supposedly coming after the PS5 restocking issues are finally settled, other reports suggest that won't happen until 2023.

We are not certain how legitimate this source is; Moore's Law is Dead is a reasonably reliable source, but we would take this with a pinch of salt. Moore's Law is Dead also claims that he has no information on specs or performance targets beyond speculation, but that he is certain that Sony is working on an upgrade for the PS5.

So what can we expect from such a console, the PS5 currently uses AMD's Zen 2-based processor and RDNA 2 graphics on a custom chipset.

And Moore's Law is Dead speculated that the PS5 Pro could be marketed as an 8K console that works with Sony's 8K TVs. While the current PS5 claims to offer 8K output, we have not seen any games running at that resolution. And even if Sony were to offer 8K games, they would not be graphics-intensive titles on the current PS5.

Similarly, Moore's Law is Dead does not believe that Sony should target 8K games on the PS5 Pro. We tend to agree, as we would prefer fast frame rates over ultra-high resolutions.

The PS5 Pro is presumably very similar to the PS4 Pro in that it uses up-mixing and checkerboard rendering to generate 8K images from images rendered at lower resolutions. We have seen Nvidia have a lot of success with deep learning super-sampling (DLSS) technology such as the GeForce RTX 3080.

Along with the alleged PS5 Pro leak, Moore's Law is Dead speculates that Sony could have a PS5 Slim ready by the end of 2022. This seems realistic, as Sony has made slim versions of previous PlayStation consoles, and the PS5 is maturing.

Moore's Law is Dead also claims to have received information that Microsoft is working on a refreshed Xbox Series S that will deliver a performance boost in late 2022 from a source who he is "confident knows what they are talking about."

Apparently, the upgraded Series S could use a 6-nanometer AMD APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) with more cores and faster clock speeds. If so, it would have more power to achieve 60 frames per second at 1080p or 1440p resolution in upcoming games like "Starfield" and "Halo Infinite". We like the Xbox Series S, especially as an Xbox Game Pass machine, but would appreciate more power.

The YouTuber also said that sources tell him that there will be an upgraded Xbox Series X, but it will not be Microsoft's focus; the "Xbox Series X Refresh" is supposedly scheduled to appear after 2023.

Given the extreme difficulty of finding a restock of the Xbox Series X and the lack of a large amount of next-generation Xbox or PlayStation games, it makes sense that upgraded versions of the PS5 and Xbox Series X would appear after 2023. After all, the current consoles have not yet been on the market for a year.

Should we wait for such an upgraded version? Because there is no certainty that it will come, and there is no easy way to purchase the current model. If you have one of the best gaming PCs, you might want to wait.

But if you are an Xbox One or PS4 gamer itching to upgrade, I would recommend the standard Xbox Series X or PS5.
