Oculus Quest is Dead - Long Live Metaquest

Oculus Quest is Dead - Long Live Metaquest

At the end of October, Facebook was reborn as the "Meta" brand: the Facebook platform remained the same, but everything else became Meta And now Oculus is getting the same treatment

The news was initially announced at the end of October by Andrew Bosworth, Meta's VP of AR/VR, and was supposed to happen in early 2022 Now, however, it appears that the Oculus brand is being phased out and will happen a bit sooner In other words, the Oculus Quest 2 you just bought is now Meta Quest

Oddly enough, the rebranding does not seem to be universal: you can still access Oculuscom under the old domain name, but the banner clearly states that it is the "Meta Quest" website Besides, the product listing in the sidebar still refers to "Oculus Quest 2" as before, and there is still plenty of text on the product pages referring to the Oculus brand

In fact, not a single mention of the word Meta appears on the page, except in the banner at the top What is even stranger is that the Meta Quest ad appeared just as I was writing this article

According to Bosworth, the decision to discontinue the Oculus brand was not made lightly However, the move is intended to "simplify" the brand architecture and "make it clear that Quest is a Meta product"

Now, at this point, things are a bit confusing; it may be some time before Meta can fully launch the Oculus rebrand, and the contradictory names on the Oculus website will not help in that regard

Complicated messages aside, this is still a rather odd decision; Oculus was a well-known name in the VR community before it was acquired by Facebook in 2014, and is arguably more recognizable now than its new (and fairly common) name, Meta

Remember, the corporate world is truly a strange one In the near future, Oculus will be Meta
