Nintendo Warns of Server Overload on Switch and Switch OLED — What to Do

The Nintendo Switch OLED is sure to be a popular Christmas gift this year, along with the regular Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite. However, Nintendo warns users to be prepared as servers will be overloaded during the holidays.

A tweet posted by Nintendo of Japan's customer service Twitter account, noted by IGN, warns users that it may be difficult to create a new Nintendo account due to server concentration. Specifically, after setting up an account, it may take some time for it to be fully created, it said. Nintendo is asking users (and possibly parents who bought their children a Switch) to create their accounts now to ensure that things run smoothly on Christmas Day.

This is not the first time a console has experienced server issues on Christmas Day; whether it's PlayStation or Xbox, there are always problems when a large influx of new users arrive on a day when everyone is off work or school.

If you want your new Nintendo Switch to work perfectly for Christmas, we recommend that you unpack your Switch now. If you get your account set up and updated before Christmas, you won't be disappointed on December 25. If you need help, check out our Nintendo Switch setup instructions.

Once you open your Switch, log in to Wi-Fi, create a Nintendo Account, and follow the setup instructions. Then go into settings and see if there are any updates you need.

If you plan to purchase the game digitally, purchase it now and download everything. If you are giving away physical games, insert each game into the Nintendo Switch, press the + button for that game, and select "Software Update." Game updates can be large, so installing them now will prevent extremely slow download speeds on Christmas Day.

Also, Nintendo's servers are not as well developed as Sony's or Microsoft's, so speeds will be relatively slow. We recommend using an Ethernet connection whenever possible; the Switch OLED has an Ethernet port built into the dock, but the standard Switch does not. A separate Ethernet adapter is required for the standard Switch; the Ugreen USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter is recommended.
