At CES 2022, as at any major technology show, you can expect to see some truly bizarre technology. It is rare to see a truly bizarre technology announcement from a major manufacturer.

Cyberpower PC's Kinetic case looks like something out of a David Cronenberg movie. Instead of simple vents, the Kinetic case uses what Cyberpower calls an "intelligent airflow" system that uses an algorithm to open and close valves.

Before I explain any further, you'll have to see this for yourself: there is a video of the Kinetic case in action on YouTube, but once you see it, you'll never see it again.

For those who choose not to watch the video, the Kinetic is a white gaming PC case with a bronze and white prism protruding from the front. (One side is opaque, the other is clear glass so you can see the components.) The 18 bronze prisms are actually vents, which the Kinetic case can open and close depending on the internal temperature of the system. Pricing is not yet listed, and the "coming soon" on Cyberpower's website sounds vaguely threatening.

The video shows Kinetic's vents opening and closing in unpredictable sequences, as if a pair of mechanical lips were breathing in and out. CyberPower engineers claim that this "intelligent airflow" system improves cooling, reduces noise, and limits the amount of dust that can enter the machine. Why this is more effective than, say, conventional vents with very small holes, we don't know exactly, but we haven't been able to test it ourselves.

As you might imagine, the reaction to the kinetic case in the YouTube comments has been quite mixed. Some users think it is time for something new in the design of the case, while others say that there are so many fragile components in what is supposed to be the most secure part of the PC. Personally, I don't believe that kinetic will significantly improve performance over traditional mesh screens, but I can see how it could waste a lot of energy in the process.

In any case, we will know more about the kinetic case when CyberPower releases further details, probably in late 2022. Until then, the company is selling more traditional cases with stylish additions such as RGB fans and see-through side panels.
