Nothing, a new consumer tech hardware company from OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, has unveiled its first wireless earbuds. With a see-through casing and a lumbering AirPods Pro-like stem, they are a mix of the familiar and the fantastic.

The Nothing blog, written by Pei, names this product Concept 1, noting that it is "the first expression of our design principles." With its name, this seems to be more of a prototype design than anything close to a final product.

Of course, Pei had previously revealed that the company would start with wireless earbuds, but no further details existed. Now, at least there is a concept design, and it is quite unique. According to the blog post, Concept 1 is "inspired by my grandmother's tobacco pipe. She was probably a very advanced grandmother, as it is made of glass or clear plastic and the components inside are visible.

From this angle, it is not clear whether Concept 1 is aiming for a one-size-fits-all approach like the standard Apple AirPods, or whether, like the AirPods Pro and most other best wireless earphones on the market today, interchangeable in-ear tips It is not known whether they will employ.

Regarding these design principles, Pei explained that Concept 1 is made to be weightless, effortless, and timeless. By "weightless," he meant simple design; pipe jokes aside, it is very compact and minimalist. There also seems to be an emphasis on streamlining and simplifying the user experience, which may be reflected in the control scheme of the earphones.

Again, since this is overtly a concept design, it could change faster than the company's "timeless" credo would suggest. However, Concept 1 does have some interesting looks, and it will be interesting to see how far it makes it into the final version.

Pei concluded his post by revealing that Nothing's "first product" will be released in the summer. This also suggests that there could be more Nothing hardware in the works besides the promised buds; the AirPods 3 are also rumored to launch this year, and Concept 1 may have a fight on its see-through hands.
