Just days before technology manufacturers and media gathered at CES in Las Vegas, LG announced eight 8K TV models for 2020. The lineup (not including this wacky roll-down display) is aimed at competing with Samsung in the budding 8K TV market.

LG's new 8K offerings include two OLED models, 77" and 88" respectively. The other six models feature LCD displays and range in size from 65" to 75".

The press release does not include information on pricing or availability; like LG's 88-inch Z9 8K OLED TV, it is unlikely that all new sets will cost $30,000. However, given that Samsung's 55-inch Q900R QLED 8K TV sells for $2,199, one would imagine that these new LG TVs are still at a premium price. (Although the available 8K models are on our CES TV wish list.)

Today's announcement perpetuates the debate between LG and Samsung over the definition of an 8K TV. Both South Korea-based companies state that a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels constitutes an 8K display, but they measure this premium technology differently.

LG says its sets feature "real 8K," meaning they meet the CTA's 8K requirements; the CTA uses a measurement called "contrast modulation" to account for the pixels in the set.

Samsung uses the 8K Association certificate instead to justify its 8K resolution standard.

LG's 2020 8K TVs also feature the new Alpha (Alpha) 9 Gen 3 AI processor, which the company claims optimizes picture and sound quality for all types of content through AI-based upscaling.
