Sony's PS5 plans have yet to be officially announced, but we have seen enough leaked information about the new console to feel that the PlayStation 5 will launch with some variation of the DualShock 5.

The familiar DualShock controller has not changed much since it first appeared in 1997, but in 2010 Sony introduced its first motion controller, the PlayStation Move (above). While it initially struggled to gain traction, it proved to be the perfect companion to PSVR. Now, according to new leaks, plans are underway for a new PS5 motion controller, which may hint at Sony's PSVR 2 design.

News outlet 91mobiles discovered a patent, published at WIPO and filed by Sony, detailing plans for an all-new motion controller. The controller is designed to be worn on the hand with a strap, with a motion sensor on the grip for finger tracking and a trigger button on the index finger. You can check out the design below:

Sony's design looks like a much less flashy controller, so the Playstation Move's color bubble may have had its day. The finger sensor is an interesting choice, although it's easy to see how the trigger feature could be applied to shooting.

In any case, if the controller is worn in the hand, the sensor could detect when the controller is being held and when it is not, which might allow fine motor control of the VR character's individual fingers. Imagine turning a controller sideways and using individual finger sensors to decipher keyboard codes or distinguish between an open hand chop and a closed fist in a fighting game.

Of course, just because a patent has been filed doesn't mean that Sony will release a controller with this technology built in, but it's cool to know that Sony is already thinking about their approach to next-generation VR.

Microsoft, on the other hand, is not focused on VR at the moment; in an interview with Stevivor, Xbox head Phil Spencer admitted that VR is "kind of isolated" and is something "nobody is looking for right now."

Either way, it remains to be seen how much Sony is investing in making VR a reality as part of its PS5 strategy, and whether this new controller has anything to do with it.
