While there are many factors involved in the choice, such as internal specs, exclusive games, and brand loyalty, a veteran gaming executive polled over 50,000 gamers to find out what they really want in a next-generation console.

Ed Boone, creative director of NetherRealm Studios, is responsible for such well-known franchises as "Mortal Kombat" and DC Comics' "Injustice." He took to Twitter to find out what gamers are looking for, and more than 50,000 Twitter users responded to the poll, which revealed that price is the most important factor when deciding which next-generation console to purchase. As many as 37% of users said that "affordability" was the most important factor among the other options. Exclusive games were not a big draw, with only 13% of participants saying they were the most important reason to buy. While this is bad news for the PS5, it is a wise decision for Microsoft, which will not release a Series X-only exclusive until 2022.

In the PS5 leaks revealed yesterday, Hiroki Toki claimed that the PS5 price would eventually be revealed. It seems as if both models are waiting and hoping to take advantage of a lower price than their competitors.

The second most common concern was, unsurprisingly, backward compatibility. Some users who have spent the past seven years building up a library of current-gen console games find it unsatisfying to restart their collections, preferring to play new titles or extend the life of existing games.

There have been many rumors about backward compatibility between the two consoles, but nothing has been confirmed by either camp; the PS4 previously released some older generation games on the PlayStation store, but many games are missing and gamers are still unable to play their favorite games on the current-gen consoles If they wanted to play them, they had to re-purchase the titles. The Xbox One's backward compatibility, however, was far more comprehensive.

Will it be the same story for this generation, we will have to wait for the full performance of the PS5 and Xbox Series X to be revealed. At the same time, if the PS5 relies on exclusives to draw gamers away from Microsoft and does not offer an affordable package, the Xbox Series X may well outperform its Sony rival in the early stages of the 8th generation console wars.
