A new "Battlefield" game will be released on Sony's PS5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X, developer DICE has confirmed. It will be released in 2021.

The developer told IGN that it is "focused on the future of Battlefield" and that while support for the first two games, "Battlefield V" and "Star Wars Battlefront II," is ending, it is looking to next-generation consoles. We already knew that the "Battlefield" games were in production and would be released on next-generation consoles, but there was no confirmation that they would be released on both PS5 and Xbox Series X, or when they would be released.

Given that the Xbox Series X and PS5 are scheduled for release at the end of the year, one might assume that a new Battlefield game would be released earlier to coincide with the launch of the new consoles. However, DICE's publisher, EA, has stated that doing so would be a bit premature.

"Releasing 'Battlefield' [in 2020] with a much smaller base of new consoles does not do justice to the title's potential; for EA, 'FY2022' basically means FY2021 in the real world."

There is no word yet on what setting the next "Battlefield" game will take place in. The game has already spanned World War I, World War II, the present day, and what Battlefield believes will be a future war setting. It would not be surprising if the next Battlefield game follows the World War II setting of Battlefield 5 and adds a tighter multiplayer experience and more varied maps and game modes.

However, EA has stated that the next installment of Battlefield will take advantage of the power of next-generation consoles, noting that it will "target new innovations enabled by next-generation platforms." This could mean ray-tracing rendering on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, something that was included in "Battlefield 5" but not supported on current generation consoles.

The new "Battlefield" games will be on next-gen consoles, along with enhanced features for next-gen consoles such as "Cyberpunk 2077". And as the year progresses, more games are expected to be announced for the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
