PS5 Video Reveals Sony's new PlayStation Studios Brand

Sony game consoles live or die by their exclusive titles, and the PS5 appears to be no exception: a brand new logo for an organization called PlayStation Studios unifies all of Sony's first-party developers, at least from an aesthetic perspective. The simple artwork is accompanied by a short video introducing some of Sony's most popular characters, including Kratos, Alloy, Ratchet, Clank, and Ellie.

Information about the new logo was shared by GamesIndustry.biz in an interview with Eric Lempel, senior vice president and head of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who shared Sony's animation. According to Lempel, the reason behind the new PlayStation Studios brand and corresponding animations is simple: Sony wants consumers to understand how much it values all of its first-party developers.

"We had no problem getting people to play these games," he said.

"But for the average consumer, it's not always clear which games come directly from Worldwide Studios.

In other words, gamers who spend their time in online discussions are well aware that Sony is directly responsible for "God of War," "Ratchet & Clank," "The Last of Us" and similar titles. But for those new to PlayStation this holiday season (and there may be plenty of them), the difference between first and third-party titles may not be immediately obvious. Hopefully this intro and its associated logo will help you distinguish between PS5 exclusive titles and games available on any platform.

The logo itself is fairly unassuming and, in this author's opinion, not as impactful as the leaked Xbox Series X, but to each his own. There is a black PlayStation logo on a white background with the word "STUDIOS" written in white below it; for an organization calling itself PlayStation Studios, nothing could be more obvious.

The animation, on the other hand, is a bit more interesting and looks almost identical to the opening logo animations, especially for recent Marvel movies. (For those who haven't seen a Marvel movie in a while, a slightly washed-out character clip cuts to one while the characters appear, then zooms out to reveal the entire logo.) This is by design.

"We are all big Marvel fans. One of our biggest games ever features a Marvel character named Spider-Man. But this is really something special for our game and our industry to do."

.

The only question is which games will be the first to feature PlayStation Studios animation. As of now, Sony has not announced a lineup of PS5 launch titles, and there is no clear indication of which big series ("God of War," "Spider-Man," "Horizon Zero Dawn," etc.) will be continued and when.

In any case, Sony probably won't introduce a new logo unless it has a title to go with it; an event to unveil the PS5 and its games probably won't be too far off.
