Crash Bandicoot 4: It's about time trailer, release date and pre-order

"Crash Bandicoot 4" takes us back to the 90s, but with much better graphics. Yes, "Crash Bandicoot" is back in a big way, and a mainline series title has been announced.

Here's everything you need to know about this marsupial's big comeback.

For starters, "Crash 4" appears to be a full and complete chapter in the saga of the platform-hopping character. We'll get to that story later, but "Crash 4" is a game that we can expect not only from the trailer, but also from the developer Toys for Bob, the same developer behind the recently remastered and well-received "Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy" and the "Spyro Reignited Trilogy". Bob, the developer behind the remastered version of Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

The announcement trailer for Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is shown below, which opens with the familiar voice of Neo Cortex, threatening to bring doom and gloom to Crash. The trailer shows gameplay footage and reveals that this time you can play not only as Crash, but also as Cortex (his nemesis).

And since it's been a while since we've seen a real "Crash Bandicoot" game, "It's About Time" looks much better than the original. In the trailer, Crash's play space is much larger, making his world feel like an actual living reality rather than a narrow passageway.

"Crash 4" will be released on PS4 and Xbox One on October 2, the eve of the PS5 and Xbox Series X holiday season launch date; no word on Xbox Smart Delivery support, but hopefully an upgrade method will be provided.

There is also no information about the PS5 and Xbox Series X being released separately.

Currently, you can pre-order "Crash 4" (PS4) for $60 and "Crash 4" (Xbox One) for $60 at Best Buy (which for some reason has it as an October 9 release). The game is also available on Amazon.

Those who pre-order "Crash 4" will receive a "Totally Tubular" retro skin for Crash and Coco.

According to Polygon, Crash 4 takes place shortly after Crash Bandicoot in 1998: villains Neo Cortex, Dr. N. Tropy, and Uka Uka have escaped the planet they were sent to and are threatening to take over the multiverse.

Players have the option of jumping into the fast-paced shoes of Crash and Coco to stop Cortex and his gang, but at certain levels they play as Cortex himself.

To defeat evil again, the heroes equip themselves with four quantum masks that give them new powers that unlock new game techniques. Those masks are the Guardians of the Universe; one mask enables time-related powers and slows down processes. The other, previewed in the trailer above, allows the crash to reverse gravity and walk on ceilings.
