Soon, Apple's HomeKit will not only tell you who's knocking on your door, it will show you.At WWDC 2020, Apple announced several new features to its smart home platform that will enhance smart home devices, including facial recognition.

First, facial recognition: if you have a home security camera with HomeKit Secure Video (Apple's cloud storage security), you can connect it to the Photos app. If you tag the camera with a name, HomeKit can identify people who appear in front of the camera, display them on your iPhone or iPad, and announce their name on your HomePod smart speaker.

Additionally, with an Apple TV running TVOS 14, a notification with a small thumbnail image will appear on the TV, which can then be enlarged for full-screen viewing.

Another new feature coming to HomeKit-connected security cameras is customizable motion zones.

Cameras that support HomeKit secure video include the Arlo Pro 2, Arlo Pro 3, Arlo Baby, eufyCam 2, and Logitech Circle 2. (Also, one camera requires a 200GB iCloud storage plan and up to five cameras require a 2TB storage plan. )

Now, these features are not new; most home security cameras have customizable motion zones, but facial recognition is a bit more unusual. Given that Apple is more privacy conscious than most other companies, one would think that more people would want to use Apple's facial recognition feature.

Other improvements coming to HomeKit include adaptive lighting: if you have smart bulbs that can change color temperature (i.e., from warm to cold), HomeKit can do this automatically over the course of the day.

When you add a new smart home device, HomeKit will also offer to automate that device. For example, suppose you install a smart garage door opener; HomeKit will suggest that you add it to Leaving Home automation to ensure that the door closes.

Public beta versions of these features will be available in July and will be fully available to consumers this fall.
