Amazon Prime Day is moving to October, according to leaked inside information first reported by Business Insider (subscription required) and emails viewed by CNBC, Prime Day may be held three months later than usual in July as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The email was allegedly sent by Amazon to sellers, telling them to use the week of Monday, October 5 as a "placeholder date" for the Amazon Prime Day promotion; CNBC reports that the email also notes that "the exact date for Prime Day has not been announced It notes that "no date has been announced.

Traditionally, Amazon celebrates Prime Day in mid-July. This year, however, the e-tailer is playing catch-up after being swamped by a surge in orders due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Since March, Amazon has hired an additional 100,000 employees to help keep people away from shuttered brick-and-mortar stores and to handle the surge in online purchases. In addition, Amazon invested more than $350 million to support its employees and partners during the COVID-19 crisis.

Just last month, Amazon began advertising deals again on its homepage, and last weekend Amazon held its first Amazon Big Style Sale, a week-long event dedicated to fashion deals.

Earlier reports indicated that Prime Day would take place in September. Due to the recent coronavirus outbreak across the U.S., Amazon may have postponed this date further.
