The release of iPhone12 reportedly kills iPhone11Pro and iPhone XR

Apple will sell the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone XR for the iPhone 12, and the standard iPhone 11 will be reduced in price by $150.

This is according to tech leaker iAppleTimes, which noted that the iPhone 11 will survive Apple's smartphone shakeout but will be reduced to $549. This leaker did not mention where they were getting this information from, but it tends to track with what Apple is doing with its iPhone range after launching its latest batch of smartphones.

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max could feature the A14 Bionic chip, a new design with flatter edges, a higher refresh rate display, and a triple rear camera array with an additional LiDAR sensor. It is expected to be a new iPhone 11 Pro, but still more of an upgrade than a major change from the iPhone 11 Pro.

Therefore, it makes sense to remove the iPhone 11 Pro from the iPhone lineup. And by reducing the price of the iPhone 11 by $150, the iPhone 12 will be available in four models: the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple will offer a mid-range option for Apple fans by reducing the price of the iPhone 11 by $150. This will be useful for those who don't want much in the way of high-end features but want a phone that offers a little more than the $399 iPhone SE 2020.

Cutting the iPhone XR also makes sense, as the iPhone XR is a bit older than the iPhone XR released in 2018. Nevertheless, it is not a bad smartphone, with a high-performance A12 Bionic chip and a design similar to the iPhone 11. However, keeping this as part of the iPhone series would give Apple a phone that would be made a bit redundant by the cheaper iPhone 11.

The standard iPhone 12, on the other hand, will have a new design and A14 chip, but will likely have only two rear-facing cameras and a basic display with a 60 Hz refresh rate. However, the new design and 5G connectivity may make it more attractive than the previous generation of iPhones.

The iPhone 12 is expected to be announced in September, but thanks to the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the actual release of some models may be delayed by a month or so. Therefore, we will soon find out what smartphones the iPhone series will consist of for 2021. We also expect to see the Apple Watch 6 join the handsets at the September showcase.
