Of all the people who could have leaked the price of the Xbox Series X, we never thought Pringles would reveal the price of Microsoft's next-generation gaming console.

However, we did learn the potential price of the Xbox Series X from what appears to be a leaked sweepstakes list from Pringles in South Africa, in which an Xbox Series X is awarded daily for 46 days.

The competition has an estimated total value of 621,000 South African rand, which, divided by 46, translates to a price of about R$13,500 per Xbox Series X, or $815. But there are many reasons to be skeptical.

First, as Twitter tipster Cavie explained, the recommended retail price in South Africa is higher than in other countries. Therefore, the purported price of this Xbox Series X could be considerably higher than the price at which it will be sold in the US and Europe.

Second, this is an estimated price by Pringles. As many retailers are keeping their prices, this price appears to be based on a rough estimate rather than internal information from Microsoft. We could be wrong, but the general trend of such leaks comes from price estimates by retailers and other firms.

Critical Hit did a little extra math and found that the estimated price of Pringles translated to £611 in the UK. Also, the U.S. could be $599, keeping the price at the same level as the UK.

Nevertheless, the Xbox Series X will feature 12 teraflops of graphics power, fast NVMe custom SSD storage, ray tracing capabilities, and dedicated audio hardware; not only is it a major step up from the Xbox One, but the console will feature a host of hardware that will advance gaming. Comparable gaming PCs with such hardware sell for around $1,000.

Therefore, there is a non-zero chance that the Xbox Series X will be the most expensive gaming console ever released by Microsoft. However, it appears that Microsoft will use the Xbox Series X as a means of getting people to subscribe to the Xbox Game Pass service and as a component of the broader Xbox ecosystem. Therefore, Microsoft may not be interested in selling many consoles at high prices.

Given that, the Xbox Series X is expected to cost about $100 less than the PS5. Overall, the price of the Xbox Series X is not expected to exceed $500. Microsoft can easily offset the loss of hardware sales margins by making the original cost through repeat subscriptions to Xbox Game Pass.

Although both Sony and Microsoft have begun taking reservations for their respective next-generation consoles, neither has revealed pricing. It appears that they are playing a game of cat and mouse to see who will reveal the price first.

Given that the PS5 and Xbox Series X are scheduled to launch in November, a price announcement seems quite imminent. We'll have to see which one blows the lid off first.
