The Xbox Series S has one big advantage over the Xbox series Xbox

Microsoft has unveiled the Xbox Series S's Quick Resume feature. The Series S is also likely to have a significant advantage over its more premium siblings due to the small number of games available for download.

Quick Resume, which will also be included in the Xbox Series X, will allow next-generation Xbox users to jump between multiple games in just a few seconds. A video of Quick Resume in action released by Microsoft shows that the days of waiting literally minutes for games to load, even on the powerful Xbox One X, may be a thing of the past.

The video shows how the Xbox Series S, with its 512GB SSD, makes it possible to jump from titles like "Star Wars Jedi" to games like "Minecor: Fallen Order" to Minecraft Dungeons," "Skate 3," and "Black," to jump to games like "Minecraft Dungeons," "Skate 3," and "Black. If this is all done in real time, there will likely be only a brief pause when jumping between games and resuming where you left off last.

The PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch all allow users to suspend and resume games while the system is in hibernation mode. However, the next generation Xbox console will expand this further to support multiple games.

Quick resume is all well and good, but there needs to be an assortment of games to jump between. Given the size of recent games, the $299 Xbox Series S's 512GB SSD may seem a bit meager. However, Jason Ronald, director of program management for Xbox, said that the Xbox Series S will target games at 1440p resolution, rather than the 4K of the Xbox Series X, which will allow for a much smaller game install size, resulting in a much less storage space, he told GameSpot

.

"When you look at the size of a typical game package, the largest percentage of the content installed on local storage is actually texture data. So by targeting 1440p, developers can avoid shipping the largest assets, the highest MIP levels," Ronald told GameSpot. Looking over the data we have from the current generation, we believe that Xbox Series S games will, on average, be about 30% smaller than Xbox Series X games."

This means that the Xbox Series S will not only offer the benefits of Quick Resume and fast loading thanks to the SSD, but it will also not suffer from large game download and install sizes. Given that it is a console, this approach is expected to negate the fact that storage capacity is relatively small by 2020 standards.

How the Xbox Series S will be positioned among the Xbox Series X and PS5 will remain to be seen come November; the Xbox console will be released on November 10, while the PS5 and its digital version will be released on November 12, although pre-orders for the PS5 have begun, may have a hard time securing a console.
