PS5 game upgrade irritates fans - and Xbox Series X is laughing

Xbox UK seems to be making fun of the news that Sony is charging extra to play "Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered" on PS5, even if you have the original game on PS4.

Microsoft did not explicitly name Sony, but posted a tweet about smart delivery of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, claiming there would be a thread on how it would work "in a few steps." However, the Xbox UK account followed up by saying that rather than start a massive Twitter thread, they would simply "just buy the game."

However, that second tweet was accompanied by the winking face of Calvin Candie, the douchey but captivating antagonist of Quentin Tarantino's "Django: Untethered. Given that the tweet came shortly after the news of "Spider-Man: Remastered," it appears that Microsoft is poking fun at Sony and the way it handles many games across the PS4 and PS5 generations.

And that is somewhat understandable. Microsoft has been hyping up about Smart Delivery, which allows users to upgrade games purchased on Xbox One to the Xbox Series X or Series S versions at no additional charge. All first-party Xbox games will support Smart Delivery, as well as third-party titles like "Assassin's Creed Valhalla" and "Dirt 5". This is a very gamer-friendly move and a pretty compelling argument for choosing the next-generation Xbox over the PS5.

However, some games, like "Cyberpunk 2077" and "Marvel's Avengers," can be upgraded from the PS4 version to PS5 for free. Sony has also already confirmed that anyone who purchased the new PS4 game "Spider-Man: Miles Morales" can upgrade to the PS5 version for free. In other words, not all games are affected by Sony's arguably lackluster approach to upgrades to next-generation consoles.

Note that Sony has stated that 99% of its PS4 games will be playable on the PS5, although not in remastered versions. However, Sony's PS Plus collection offers a select number of PS4-only games that will run on PS5, presumably with some enhancements (even if only in loading times).

The Xbox UK tweet seemed humorous and made a good point about cross-generational gaming. However, Sony has stated that it is very much focused on delivering next-generation gaming experiences rather than building a gaming ecosystem as Microsoft seems to be doing.

Indeed, Sony has taken a slight step backwards in that regard, with exclusive games like "Horizon Forbidden West" also set to launch on PS4. However, Sony's PS5 game lineup appears stronger than the Xbox Series X, which lost a major launch title when "Halo Infinite" was delayed to 2021.

Overall, we have argued that the PS5 and Xbox Series X are not needed at launch, as neither console's launch game lineup is particularly strong. But even so, reservations for the consoles sell out quickly.
