Yes, the Xbox Series X and PS5 games allow you to choose which bits to install, but the space it saves is limited. Fancy new compression techniques may alleviate some of this, but it is still clear that software install capacity is going in one direction.

If there's anything we've learned from past consoles, it's that the amount of storage at launch always ultimately proves inadequate: the Xbox 360 came with a 20GB hard drive, and by the end of the generation a model with a 250GB drive was released. Similarly, the original PS4 came with 500 GB of storage, while newer models come with 1 TB.

As SSD prices come down, Microsoft and Sony will likely respond with new Series X and PS5 models. Early adopters may want to purchase an external storage drive for the PS5.
