Xbox Series X is better than Xbox One X, but not the way you think

The arrival of the Xbox Series X does not mean that Microsoft will give up on the Xbox One and Xbox One X any time soon. However, just because the older Xbox can play all the new and upcoming games does not put it on equal footing.

While the Xbox Series X is clearly a more powerful machine, it has another important advantage over its predecessor. It clearly consumes less power.

This information comes from the Dutch website Tweakers, which put the Series X through a number of technical tests and compared its performance to that of the 4K-capable Xbox One X. The Series X is quieter, faster, and consumes less energy.

According to Tweakers' tests, the Xbox Series X uses 128W of power when playing games, while the Xbox One X uses as high as 180W to do the same. The Series X also required only 28W for sleep mode, compared to 43W for the One X.

This is a huge difference, and despite the Series X's massive power, Microsoft has clearly done much to ensure that it is much more energy efficient than its predecessor.

In terms of sound, the Series X is also quieter, operating at 25 dB during gameplay and 24 dB on the menu screen. In the same situation the Xbox One X was 38dB and 27dB respectively.

Interestingly, the Series X was cooler in Tweakers' comparison tests, despite reports that the console gets quite hot. They recorded no temperatures above 48 degrees Celsius (118.4 degrees Fahrenheit), although they admit that their method of using the FLIR camera is not that accurate. The Xbox One X, on the other hand, reached a maximum of 65 degrees Celsius (149 degrees Fahrenheit).

As noted in previous reports, it makes sense that a console using less power would generate less heat, even if the fans are running quietly.

Power has been a major focus of Xbox Series X marketing in the past, but it appears that power is not taking precedence over other important factors; on November 10, if you can get your pre-order in, you can see for yourself.
