What makes the TCL 10 5G UW particularly attractive, however, is value: the $399 TCL 10 5G is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 765G processor. This is the exact same chip found in the $499 Pixel 4a 5G and the OnePlus Nord, which is not sold domestically; it has a large 4,500mAh battery, 128GB of storage, 6GB of RAM, and a 48MP primary lens with ultra-wide angle and macro optics, and a triple-lens camera that combines a 48MP primary lens with ultra-wide-angle and macro optics.
This is almost across the board better than the $449 AT&T-exclusive Motorola One 5G, which until this moment held the title of the cheapest 5G phone in America. However, the Motorola One 5G had a slightly slower processor and less RAM.
Furthermore, it must be said that the $399 TCL 10 5G UW is almost half the price of the cheapest 5G-enabled iPhone, the $699 iPhone 12 mini.
TCL's cell phone endeavor may be young, but it was initially encouraging: it can only connect to 4G networks, but it features a stunning glass and metal design and a curved OLED display.
The TCL 10 5G UW's 6.5-inch screen uses LCD technology rather than OLED, but at least it is HDR10 certified and offers rich contrast. [The TCL 10 5G UW also includes TCL's proprietary features such as the Nxtvision engine, which can upscale SDR content to HDR-like quality, and Super Bluetooth, which can stream audio to up to four Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Admittedly, I was not a big fan of either when they were included in the TCL 10 Pro.
Ultimately, the product's main appeal is its price, which is not surprising given that TCL sells a fine TV for less than its competitors, although the TCL 10 5G UW is a Verizon exclusive, which may limit its appeal, at least that is offset by truly attractive hardware.
The TCL 10 5G UW will be available on Verizon starting October 29.
