Xbox Series X has a Nasty Compatibility Issue - What You Need to Know

With the launch of the Xbox Series X just two weeks away, many gamers will be trying to get everything ready to play their new console right away.

The last thing they need is bugs, especially bugs that prevent games from showing up on the screen. Because there is nothing worse than getting a system and not being able to use it because of the HDMI port.

HDMI is the real problem here, according to Heise Online. It turns out that many Panasonic HMDI 2.1 chipsets are affected by a bug that inhibits 4K/120fps content and 8K/60fps content. given that one of the selling points of the Xbox Series X is 4K/120fps play, this is a major problem.

Thankfully, this issue only affects certain AV receivers, specifically the latest HDMI 2.1-capable models from Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha. As such, content from certain graphics cards, including the NVIDIA RTX 3000 series and Xbox Series X, cannot pass through.

The problem itself makes the screen go blank, rendering everything a bit useless and weakening what should have been a major selling point of these new HDMI 2.1 receivers. Thankfully, it is not the game console or graphics card that has the problem.

If you have one of these receivers and don't want to (or can't) return it, there are several workarounds (via Audioholics). The easiest is to connect the console directly to the display, and then route the audio back to the AV receiver via HDMI. This allows you to use the display's ARC/eARC features to feed audio back to the AVR, which can then decode the native audio from the source. Enable the CEC/ARC option on the display and the HDMI Control or ARC option on the AVR.

Another option is to limit the console output to 4K/60fps until a permanent solution is found. Since this is the default setting, you will not notice this problem unless you try to change it. Neither is a particularly ideal workaround, but it is still better than not being able to play at all.

The affected receivers are Marantz SR series (SR5015, SR6015, SR7015, SR8015), Denon X series (AVR-X2700H, AVC-X3700H, AVC-X4700H, AVC-X6700H), Yamaha RX-V4A, RX-V6A are. If you own any of these products, please keep this news in mind as you may be surprised when your Xbox arrives.

Thankfully, the PS5 does not seem to be affected by this bug, so if you have both the affected receiver and Sony's latest game console, you should be fine. But it's worth keeping this issue in mind just in case. Especially if you plan to get a machine with a new Nvidia graphics card.
