PS5 4K movie collection revealed — and it's kind of a disappointment

The PS5 has a built-in 4K Blu-ray player, which is good news for videophiles who prefer to own physical media. 4K Blu-ray, while not as necessary as previous Blu-rays in 1080p, thanks to the proliferation of streaming media, remains a gorgeous way to enjoy (and and preserve), it remains a gorgeous way to enjoy (and preserve) your favorite movies.

Sony's upcoming PS5 4K Movie Essentials Collection will reissue many of Sony Studios' 4K Blu-rays, especially for gamers. The only problem is that these movies are quite expensive.

PS5 4K Movie Essentials will include:

Information comes from IGN, which has found PS5 4K Movie Essentials available for pre-order on Amazon. 11 different options are available, most of them at $31 apiece. That's not unreasonable for a 4K Blu-ray, but quite expensive compared to 4K streaming and 1080p Blu-ray purchases. Furthermore, in my estimation, there are only four movies worth owning to watch over and over again.

Anyone who has seen most of these films will immediately see the problem: most of them are disposable, big-budget movies that are only worth watching once on the plane. In particular, "Venom," "Hellboy," and "Bloodshot" are not critical darlings, to say the least.

Some mid-tier shrug-offs include "Spider-Man: Far From Home," "Zombieland," "Double Tap," "Underworld," and "Bloodshot": "Double Tap," "Underworld," "Pineapple Express," etc. It's. (I wasn't sure whether to put "Pineapple Express" in the "legitimately good" category, but there's not much to be gained by watching it a second time.)

Of the films listed, only "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," "Baby Driver," "Bad Boys for Life," and "The Fifth Element" deserve their high asking price. And to be fair, these films would probably look great on the PS5, which outputs gorgeous images on a 4K HDR TV.

If you buy one movie, at least there are plenty of ways to watch it; each film in the PS5 4K Movie Essentials collection includes a 4K Blu-ray, a Full HD Blu-ray, and a digital code, and each film also has its own set of extras. Whether this is worth twice what you pay for a 4K streaming copy (or about 10 times what you pay for a 4K streaming rental) is up to you.

It's not hard to see why Sony thought these films would appeal to gamers, especially the audience associated with the excellent PS4 "Spider-Man" game. But at $31 a piece ($27 for "Underworld" and a whopping $46 for "Bad Boys for Life"), this offer may only be for dedicated moviegoers.
