Looking back at the launch of the PS4, it was clear that Sony was planning ahead for VR, although they didn't know it at the time. That's why the DualShock 4 features a giant blue LED bar.

At the launch of the PS5, the future of VR on the PlayStation was not entirely clear. The console supports the original PSVR headset, but there is no sign of an upgraded PSVR 2 and apparently shouldn't be expected for some time.

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan told the Washington Post that VR still has a long way to go, but will still be a "meaningful component" of interactive entertainment. Ryan believes that VR won't make big waves anytime soon, but that it will happen someday. [PlayStation believes in VR. Sony believes in VR and is convinced that at some point in the future VR will be a key component of interactive entertainment. Will that be this year? No. Will it be next year? No. It will not be this year. But it will happen at some point. We believe so. And we are very happy with all the experiences we have had with PlayStation VR and look forward to where it will take us in the future."

It is not clear when that certain point in time will be, but it does suggest that Sony will not announce a next-generation PSVR headset for some time. PS5 owners will therefore have to use the original PSVR, which was released in late 2016. They will also have to ask Sony for a free adapter, otherwise they will not be able to use the PS4 camera with the new console.

Of course, Sony's competitors are not so reluctant to move forward with VR in the short term; Facebook is releasing a series of headsets like the newly released Oculus Quest 2, and according to newly discovered code, Microsoft is seems to be finally getting into VR gaming with the Xbox Series X. But in the meantime, there are plenty of great PSVR games on the market, so you can still get plenty of use out of your existing headset.
