Xbox Series X May Be Too Fast for the Witcher 3 — Here's Why

Many claims have been made about the Xbox Series X and its hardware. Much of it has revolved around the power of Microsoft's next-generation console and how it will chew up new games. But have you ever wondered what will happen to your old games?

While it is expected that they will be improved without being optimized for next-gen consoles, this can have unexpected downsides. Like, for example, "The Witcher 3" not being able to handle the speed of consoles at all.

The following clip, taken from a YouTube play video and posted on Twitter, will give you an idea of what I mean. It turns out that the SSDs in the Series X are so fast that the game can't keep up.

The SSD's speed of 2.4 GB/second is about 40 times faster than the Xbox One's hard disk drive, so fast travel in The Witcher 3 is instantaneous, with no loading screens. Therefore, there is not enough time for the map to render properly. This results in an unrendered scene being displayed for a moment until the game catches up.

CD Projekt Red has promised to upgrade The Witcher 3 to next-generation consoles, due in 2021, with Series X launching on November 10. This explains why the game has not been tweaked for next-gen consoles and why this graphical glitch occurs during fast travel.

Apparently, the upgrade will include visual improvements such as ray tracing and faster load times. The faster load times should, in theory, address the issue of maps taking an extra second or two to render after fast travel.

No word yet on when the upgrade will be available, but CDPR has confirmed that it will be freely available to anyone who already owns the game on PC, Xbox One, or PS4. The upgrade will also be available on PC, Xbox Series X, and PS5.
