Ps5 will overheat at Best Buy - this is what you should not do

Some people like it hot, but not the PS5. That's because a PS5 placed in a Best Buy kiosk got a little too hot in its cozy enclosure and produced an overheating error.

A picture posted by Twitter user Xzyliac has been making the rounds online, and the PS5 in question displays this message: "Your PS5 is too hot, please turn off your PS5 and wait until the temperature drops." This is a rather remarkable warning that one needs to be careful where and how one stores one's PS5.

The PS5 is the largest of the next generation consoles, dwarfing even the relatively large Xbox Series X.

[16] [17] The PS5 is the largest of the next generation consoles. Part of the reason for this is the large fan for cooling, which comes in handy when unleashing 10.28 teraflops of graphics power.

However, this cooling system does not seem to work well if the PS5 does not have enough space.

Not surprisingly, being trapped in a sealed box with no room for hot air to escape is not the best setup for Sony's next-generation gaming console. If we were Best Buy, we would have vents in the box, but we are tech journalists, not retail gurus.

Now, this is not a realistic way for people to store their PS5 consoles. However, it does indicate that there is a risk of overheating if the PS5 is placed in a sealed entertainment unit or on a narrow entertainment shelf.

All of this means that when purchasing a PS5, one should consider not only how its massive size will fit into an entertainment unit, but also the ventilation in that location. For those with compact entertainment units or small apartments, that may be a difficult proposition.

The PS5 will be released on November 12 in the U.S. and November 19 in the U.K., both of which are when the temperature drops and people start turning up the heat. It will therefore be interesting to see if the PS5 could start running a little hotter as the ambient temperature rises overall.
