This limited edition Amazon Echo looks great and supports good reason

It's no secret that the Black Friday shopping season brings out the dark side of consumer capitalism, but what about when it does good? Whether or not Amazon intentionally lined up the limited edition (PRODUCT) RED Echo with a month of incessant deals, it's a great score that also gives back to global health programs.

Amazon is bundling two Philips Hue bulbs with the fourth-generation (PRODUCT) RED Echo for $125, and while it's listed as a 3% savings, what's special about this deal is not the money back in your pocket, but the fact that for every (ECHO) RED purchased for every (echo)RED purchased, $10 will be donated to the Global Fund to support health efforts in sub-Saharan Africa. [Our goal at Tom's Guide is to help you make smart buying decisions. Not every laptop or smart home gadget you pick up will save the world, but you have a chance to contribute to the effort to make the world a better, healthier place for more people.

Product (RED) devices are a staple of Apple's iPhone lineup, and it's great to see Amazon promoting similar partnerships with nonprofits with their Alexa-powered smart speakers. It's not a perfect solution, and the big companies could do more, but it's still a welcome option for shoppers.

In our review of the Amazon Echo (4th generation), we loved the new orb-like design, and the more powerful audio and even more powerful smart home skills make the latest Echo one of the best smart speakers you can buy this year.

Amazon bundled the ECHO (RED) with two packs of Philips Hue lights, which are considered the best smart light bulbs around and complement the Echo's smart home skills nicely. In short, this is a great holiday gift option instead of simply buying a standard Echo and another pack of smart bulbs.

As the holidays approach, consider ways to volunteer your time or money, if you can. At the very least, be willing to participate in purchases that have this give-back component.
