The Razer Hammerhead Pro is basically the AirPods Pro for gamers — here's why

Razer Hammerhead Pro True Wireless Earbuds look like this when crossed with Apple Airpods Pro and a gaming headset.

Following in the footsteps of the Hammerhead True Wireless Earphones, the $200 Razer Hammerhead True Wireless Earphones Pro have some serious audio features, including active noise cancellation (ACN) and THX audio support It's a great choice for the best gaming phones out there. And it is the perfect partner to one of our picks for the best gaming phones.

By "Pro" version, Razer has upgraded the original Hammerhead True Wireless from a blocky AirPods 2-like shape to something closer to the AirPods Pro, albeit with a gamer aesthetic. In other words, you get an in-ear design that should prove to be more comfortable than the older Hammerhead earbuds.

But the redesign isn't worth the $100 price increase, because the Razer Hammerhead Pro also features "advanced" hybrid active noise cancellation, which promises to filter noise in and out of the ear. Using microphones inside and outside the earphones, the Hammerhead Pro can detect unwanted noise and effectively remove it by generating "inverse sound waves."

The earbuds also feature customizable gesture touch controls, IPX4 waterproofing, and a low-latency mode for gaming that promises up to 50 times better response times with better audio and video sync.

The biggest draw, however, is THX certification. Given only to audio equipment that meets strict criteria for delivering high-fidelity audio, THX testing examines every aspect of a product's sound, including distortion, frequency response, and bass management, to ensure the most realistic listening experience.

THX also has provisions for noise isolation, and with this in mind, Razer combines ANC with foam tips that expand in the ear. This promises to make the buds more comfortable as well as form a better seal that keeps the outside world out.

The downside is that the battery life is not great. The earbuds only last four hours on a single charge, and the charging case only has room for four more charges. This is on the low side, as there are earbuds out there that cost more than twice that.

Samsung's Galaxy Buds Plus, which omits ANC, can be used for 11 hours on a single charge, while the Jabra Elite Active 75t can be used for 7.5 hours with ANC on. Therefore, it is not recommended, especially for those who like long gaming sessions.

The Razer Hammerhead True Wireless Pro is currently available from Razer for $200 and will be available at other retailers later this month.
