Samsung's 110-inch Micro LED TV will challenge OLED in early 2021

After years of demonstrations and unveilings, Samsung's giant MicroLED TV is finally a reality, hitting store shelves in Q1 2021.Reborn as a 110-inch TV, Samsung's MicroLED TV offers a stunning combination of 4K resolution, innovative design and spectacular offering a stunning combination of 4K resolution, innovative design, and performance.

Samsung MicroLED TVs use micrometer-sized LED lights as individual pixels within the screen, much like a Jumbotron display scaled down to modern resolution. With each pixel acting as a self-emitting light source, MicroLED technology promises perfect blacks and pixel-perfect contrast like those currently found only in OLED TVs.

With the introduction of OLEDs in 2005 and QLEDs in 2013, the arrival of MicroLED displays represents the biggest innovation in screen technology in years, and Samsung hopes to make microLEDs a competitor to OLEDs in the coming years.

An early demonstration of Samsung's microLED TV technology, initially called "The Wall," used a 12-foot modular system that used tiled segments to create a giant screen. Samsung touted this modular design as the future of television. With a sufficient number of modular panels, a screen of any aspect ratio could be assembled and scaled to any resolution.

This is an attractive feature for commercial signage, but less attractive to the regular TV viewer, so Samsung abandoned the modular concept in favor of a more traditional form factor and reduced the size to a relatively reasonable 9 feet.

According to Samsung, this prefabricated 110-inch model "delivers amazing video, audio, and smart features right out of the box." microLED's unique construction uses surface mount technology, with individual LEDs on one side of the combined circuit board and display panel The LEDs are placed directly on one side of the combined circuit board and display panel. This gives microLED TVs an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 99.99% and eliminates the need for a surrounding bezel. In addition, because no backlight is needed, the TV itself is extremely slim and can be mounted flush to the wall.

Smart features also allow this massive TV to be used as four 55-inch-sized split screens, each with 1080p resolution. In this mode, four sporting events can be viewed at once, but the TV also supports multiple devices, so each family member can have a screen to watch shows, movies, and games at the same time.

The 110-inch TV has a built-in 5.1 channel sound system that does not require an external speaker system. It also includes Samsung's "Object Tracking Sound Pro" technology, which connects the sound source on the screen to the sound, making it appear as if the dialogue is coming from a specific actor or from a vehicle passing by on the screen.

While we have yet to see Samsung's MicroLED TV with our own eyes, we did get to see its predecessor, "The Wall," up close several times. The technology delivers excellent picture quality and phenomenal brightness, and we expect to be similarly impressed when MicroLED TVs are demonstrated and reviewed.

Pricing information has yet to be announced, but Samsung says MicroLED TVs will be available for purchase in the first quarter of 2021; details are expected to be released in January, with more details to come during CES 2021.
