According to a report from Taiwanese publisher DigiTimes, the AirPods Pro 2 is only a few months away - April at the earliest - from launch.

The report, which focuses primarily on Apple's flash supplier Winbond, leaks that the second-generation AirPods Pro "is expected to launch later in the first half of this year." [If you're an iOS user looking for new headphones, you may not need to splash out $549 on the AirPods Max just yet.

DigiTimes previously claimed that the yet-to-be-announced AirPods 3 would also be available in early 2021. However, this is the first indication that the higher-end AirPods Pro 2 may arrive around the same time.

"Winbond is also expected to be one of the NOR flash suppliers for Apple's next-generation AirPods Pro, which is expected to launch later this year in the first half," a source told DigiTimes. The Taiwan-based chipmaker will run its NOR flash production line at nearly full capacity for the next six months."

Not only that, but Japanese publication MacOtakara claims that the AirPods Pro 2 could arrive as early as April.

Bloomberg previously reported that the AirPods Pro 2 will target the second half of 2021 instead of the first half. And many informant LeaksApplePro tweeted: "Expect release in Q4 2021 or Q1 2022."

Nevertheless, this latest report quotes sources believed to be involved in Apple's flash memory manufacturing process as saying that a new pair of Apple's top-of-the-line wireless earbuds will arrive much sooner than that. Given that the original AirPods Pro is already over a year old, and knowing Apple's penchant for annual updates, the follow-up release seems to have been delayed. Therefore, a spring or early summer release would not be outlandish.

The recent release of major premium earphone competitors like the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds and Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro may also be pushing Apple to release the new AirPods Pro 2 ASAP.
