More than 170 free channels are now available on Google TV.

Google hopes to attract more streaming users to its Google TV platform. To that end, the company has added more than 10 Freeplay channels to the service, bringing the total to more than 170. Some of the channels are tailored to the holiday season, allowing users to get into the holiday spirit without spending a fortune.

It is worth noting that although these channels are free, they are ad-supported, making them feel like watching traditional cable TV. If the content is free, though, it's hard to complain; Google added the following two channels in November:

Following these channels, Google added 13 more (discovered by 9To5Google), bringing the total to over 170. Presumably, the holiday channels are temporary, and if Google removes them once the holiday season is over, the number of channels could drop below 170 again. However, the Freeplay app will increase its channel count if the company continues to add more channels than it phases out.

With regard to channel removals, Google has removed Motortrend Fast TV from its service. There are other channels that focus on cars, and we hope that those channels will continue to entertain viewers even after Motortrend Fast TV is gone.

To take advantage of these free channels, you will need a Google TV device, whether it be a TV with Google TV built in or the best streaming device with Google TV.
