Apple has yet to announce the iPhone 17, yet rumors of leaked information about the 2026 iPhone 18 Pro continue to circulate. According to the latest information, the upcoming flagship smartphone will feature a camera upgrade that is closer to an SLR than previous iPhones.
This is not the first time the term variable aperture has been mentioned in regards to the iPhone 18 Pro, but analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has once again revealed that Apple plans to use this advanced lens technology in its next phone. Thus, everyone has reason to consider holding off on purchasing the iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro.
In his report, Kuo said that the aperture blade assembly equipment will be supplied by BE Semiconductor, a Dutch manufacturer. Since the blades control the amount of light that passes through them, where does the variable portion come from?
The current iPhone Pro model has a fixed aperture of ƒ/1.78. The lens is always open on these phones, forcing the photographer to use this widest aperture. the iPhone 18 Pro's variable aperture allows for more customization in each shot, creating a more attractive image with a realistic depth of field.
Previously, we heard rumors that the iPhone 17 Pro would include a variable aperture lens. However, the latest rumor targeting the iPhone 18 Pro suggests that Apple may need another year to prepare the technology for mass production.
This is still a rumor, and even if it is accurate, the iPhone 18 model is not expected to launch until September 2026. That means there is plenty of time for Apple to change its plans if the variable aperture technology does not work as smoothly as Apple expects.
