Sick of the Squid Game": Creator Dong-Hyuk Hwang admits he's ready to leave the Netflix hit.

Fans of “Squid Game” will no doubt be overjoyed when this South Korean dystopian drama launches its highly anticipated second season on Netflix on Thursday, December 26. (Look for new characters in Season 2 as well.)

Ironically, however, “Squid Game” creator Dong-Hyuk Hwang may not share the same enthusiasm for the show's revival. [Hwang Dong-hyuk, who won the Outstanding Director Award at the 2022 Emmy Awards, the first Korean to win in that category, and returned as director and executive producer of the survival drama's second season, said in a recent interview with Variety how “challenging” it was to create the show. He spoke of how “challenging” the production of the show was.

“The whole process of writing, producing, and directing was so difficult that I never intended to do a second season. We didn't think about doing another season.”

He added that the reason he continued with a third season as well as a second season was because of the “immense success” of the previous one. The director previously told Variety that he lost eight or nine teeth due to stress during the production of the first season.

So it comes as little shock that after completing post-production work on Season 3 of “Squid Game,” director Hwang is ready to say goodbye to the dystopian world he created.

“I'm tired. I'm tired. In a way, I have to say I'm sick of the 'Squid Game,'” Fan said in an interview with Variety.

“I'm fed up with a life of making something and promoting something. So I'm not thinking about my next project right now. I'm just thinking about going to some remote island somewhere and spending my free time without Netflix calling me.” (But “not the island of ‘Squid Game,’” the filmmaker jokingly clarified.)

After the seven episodes of the second season premiere on December 26, the story of “Squid Game” will continue with a third and final season coming in 2025.

“I can't hide my excitement in writing this letter to announce the air date for Season 2 and to share news of the final season, Season 3. The fierce clash between [Giffen's and Frontman's] two worlds will continue into Season 3, the series finale.”

As for Season 2, the official synopsis reads: “Three years after winning the Squid Game, Player 456 is determined to find the mastermind behind it and put an end to the vicious squid game. Song Ki-hoon uses this large sum of money to fund his search, starting with the most obvious: finding a man in a sharp suit playing dakjis on the subway. But when his efforts finally bear fruit, the path to destroying the organization proves more dangerous than he had imagined.
