January's Disney Plus kicks off with several big franchises, including the final two episodes of “Skeleton Crew,” the latest in the “Star Wars” series featuring children lost in the galaxy beyond. While the first season of “Skeleton Crew” concludes, a new animated series starring Marvel superhero Spider-Man begins, and a documentary about Pixar's little-known film spinoff returns with new episodes.
This month also sees the premiere of Nat Geo's series “My Best Friend's an Animal,” about an unlikely friendship between humans and wild animals, and the second of two new specials in the animated series “Kiff,” “Lore of the Ring Light Kiff” will also air. Here are this month's highlights on Disney Plus.
This is the second season of the TV series based on R.L. Stine's “Goosebumps,” but it is not a continuation of the plot of the first season. Goosebumps takes a similar approach to American Horror Story, incorporating elements from the various Goosebumps books into a new family-friendly scary story in its second season.
In this installment, two teenage siblings and their friends begin an investigation into teens who went missing in 1994. In the present, the siblings' father (David Schwimmer) begins to act strangely, which may indicate the continuation of some mysterious threat.Director Rob Letterman, who directed the 2015 film “Goosebumps,” is still involved, but the new series is accessible to a younger audience but is darker and more horror-filled than that comedy film.
Premieres January 10 on Disney Plus
The first season of this Nat Geo nature series takes inspiration from the 1998 Pixar film “A Bug's Life,” grafting a cute adventure story onto real (but stylized) footage of insects going about their typical daily business. The film grafts a cute adventure story onto the Narrator Awkwafina returns for a second season of insect antics. It may have been enhanced with special effects, but it is still a fascinating introduction to the wonders of the natural world.
The new five-episode season will feature insects such as the Femme Fatale Firefly, Bachelor Luna Moth, Reality Assassin Bug, and Botany Bay Weevil. There will also be special behind-the-scenes episodes showing the mix of science and artistry that went into the close-up of insect activity for the show.
Premiered January 15 on Disney Plus
The animated series, titled Spider-Man: The Freshman Year in 2021, was initially announced as a prequel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland and was thought to be a prequel to the Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland. However, it is actually set in one of Marvel's many alternate universes and features Hudson Thames as the voice of 15-year-old Peter Parker, shortly after acquiring Spider-Man's powers.
Thames is also the voice of Peter in the “What If ......” episode, but “Your Neighborhood Spider-Man” is set in an alternate branch of the multiverse, and young Peter's mentor is ruthless businessman Norman Osborn (Colman Domingo). With an animation style reminiscent of the early Spider-Man comics, the film is part of the larger tapestry of the MCU, but allows for a freer depiction of Spider-Man's early years.
