The best new movies and shows streaming this weekend on Netflix, Disney Plus and more (Dec. 27-29)

There's a plethora of new movies and TV shows to watch this weekend, and the last few days of 2024 bring a slew of new releases on the best streaming services, including Netflix and Disney Plus.

At the top of my weekend viewing list is “Squid Game” Season 2. This Korean thriller follows Gihoon (Lee Jung-jae) as he plays more deadly games to put an end to the competition. In movies, “Gladiator II” is now available on Premium Video on Demand. Here's a guide to what to watch this weekend.

Netflix's most streamed show to date returns with new games, more dangerous thrills, and even higher stakes. The last time we saw Gihoon (Lee Jung-jae), aka Player 456, he turned back from boarding a plane to reunite with his daughter to find a way to end a competition that had claimed so many lives. Three years later, with more knowledge, he once again enters the game of life and death, battling new participants for the 456 billion won prize. His greatest adversary, however, is a mysterious front man (Lee Byung-hun) who keeps his true motives a secret. Nucci Gatova reprises her role as the 15th Doctor, and “Bridgerton's” Nicolas Coughlan joins as a new character named Joy, as she checks into a London hotel in 2024 and opens a secret door to the Time Hotel, leading to danger, dinosaurs, and the Doctor! The special is available on Disney Plus! ►Special available on Disney Plus

Comedian Nate Burgadze has been around the standup circuit for years and is known as a clean comic, but his hosting of “Saturday Night Live” last year (“Washington's Dream” was a blast) has made him a more top-notch charming presence. (“Washington's Dream 2” was still pretty funny.) In his third special, he riffs on the man's nightly pizza ordering strategy, wanting a second dog, and relying on a responsible wife. Russell Crowe does not appear, as his character Maximus Decimus Meridius is long gone, although he is present in spirit. Instead, the story focuses on Lucilla's (Connie Nielsen) long-lost son, the captive Hanno (Paul Mescall). He returns to Rome as a gladiator, enslaved by Macrinus (Denzel Washington), an ambitious arms dealer with designs on the throne. Hanno must fight to survive in the Colosseum while uncovering the truth about her lineage. She plays an up-and-coming artist who takes a step back to raise her children. Because her husband (Scoot McNairy) travels for work, most of the childcare falls on her shoulders. Then something strange happens to her - she can turn into a dog at night. That is, she can turn into a dog at night.

Available on Hulu [17]
