Caitlin Kalinowski, former head of the AR glasses team at Meta, which is also Apple alum, has announced that she will join OpenAI to lead the robotics and consumer hardware division.
Kalinowski posted the announcement to X, and people were immediately excited about the news and asked if this would lead to more consumer-friendly devices like OpenAI robots and smart glasses.
"In my new role, I will first focus on openai's robotics work and partnerships to bring AI into the physical world." It helps us to integrate and benefit humanity," says Kalinowski.
The news comes from behind the revelation that renowned Apple designer Jony Ive is working on a new AI-first hardware device with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. It is unlikely that these 2 are connected, but it seems that the AI hardware front and center will appear in 2025.
Kalinowski boasts an impressive CV and leads the augmented Reality hardware team at meta's Reality Labs, working on products such as Orion smart glasses, Meta Quest2 and Oculus Rift. Prior to joining Meta, Kalinowski was Apple's technology leader and involved in the development of the Mac Pro and MacBook Air.
When she's not busy building great hardware, Kalinowski uses causes close to her heart, such as fighting gun violence and promoting diversity in the tech industry.
In response to one message about a prototype that OpenAI may be working on, Kalinowski says she's officially yet to enter the company. He replied that he did not know if that kind of thing was already in the work.
Apple's decorated designer Jony Ive is reportedly working on a new AI hardware device with his new boss Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. While details of consumer tech devices are kept under wraps, initial reports suggest the results are meant to be less socially disruptive than the iPhone.
Speculation points to another form of smart glasses and wearable technology, but given the lack of information, it can easily replace the Amazon Echo.
Although little is known about OpenAI's hardware plans, earlier this year, the AI company announced the creation of a humanoid robot along with Microsoft. We found that we were discussing potential investments with Tech startups.
A few months later, we saw a preview of a prototype humanoid powered by OpenAI sofware. The second iteration, Figure 02, is able to perform everyday tasks and retain natural language conversations thanks to GPT-4o and AI voice.
On LinkedIn, Kalinowski emphasized that OpenAI and ChatGPT have changed the world, improved the way people get information and interact, and brought meaningful benefits around the world.
"AI is currently the most exciting engineering frontier in technology, and I couldn't be thrilled to be part of this team," Kalinowski wrote.
