Cause found for yellow stripe defect in Amazon Kindle Color software.

When it comes to the Kindle, Amazon didn't have a very good week. It began with reports that owners of the new Kindle Color software were seeing an obtrusive yellow band at the bottom of the display.

Shortly thereafter, allegations were made that Amazon was canceling shipments of the color software. The shopping giant acknowledged the display defect and offered refunds and replacements to affected ColorSoft owners. A spokesperson told Tom's Guide, “We are making appropriate adjustments to ensure that new devices will not have this issue in the future.” At the time, it was not clear what the cause of the yellowing problem was.

Now, however, we may know the reason why this defect occurred. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in X that the problem was caused by Amazon's use of a different version of components for the color soft display than those used in the top-of-the-line Kindle with its monochrome screen.

Kuo writes, “Amazon is using a different OCA (optically clear adhesive) than the one used in its grayscale e-paper displays. This change was made to enhance the limited contrast capabilities of E Ink's Kaleido color e-paper technology. While component suppliers have developed several hardware solutions, Amazon seems to be leaning toward software-based fixes.”

Assuming this is correct, it appears that whatever adhesive Amazon chose will quickly degrade and cause yellowing problems.

The yellowing problem was never an issue in the Kindle Colorsoft review. We have checked the devices numerous times since the reports began coming in, and the Kindles we have tested do not appear to have the yellowing band.

Tom's Guide contacted Amazon and confirmed that there is adhesive behind the yellow band.

Presumably, Amazon will fix this problem soon, either through software or hardware fixes, and future models of the Colorsoft should not have the yellow band.

Still, if you're interested in trying out the first Kindle with a color display and rolling the dice, $279.99 / £269.99 will get you in the wallet. As I said in my review, “This is the Kindle I've been waiting for. It really is a great device. If the stripe issue is resolved, this could be the Kindle to get.
