Apple promised a week of Mac announcements starting today with the unveiling of the new iMac, Apple's all-in-one computer powered by the M4 chip, available in seven colors, a new 12MP Center Stage camera, new nanotextured glass, up to four USB-C ports, and 16GB of RAM. As with all recent Apple devices, Apple Intelligence is another standout feature.
John Tarnas, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, said in a blog post: “It's a whole new era for the iMac. iMac is the first Apple computer to feature the M4 chip found in the latest iPad Pro. Apple says the new iMac is up to 1.7 times faster than the M1 iMac, and the processor can handle advanced graphics and intense workloads. The chip's neural engine (for AI) is also more than three times faster than the iMac M1, Apple says.
The new iMac retains the same sleek design as its predecessors, like the iMac M3 we reviewed. However, it has several new features, including the aforementioned 12MP front camera and two or four USB-C ports. New colors include green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver. The iMac also comes with a different color Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse, all of which now have additional USB-C ports for charging.
The iMac's 24-inch display can now be configured with a new nanotextured glass option that reduces reflections and glare without sacrificing image quality. This reduces reflections and glare without sacrificing image quality. This should make it easier to use your new iMac in areas of your home (or office) that are often exposed to sunlight.
The iMac M4 comes standard with macOS Sequoia, so you can try out features like iPhone mirroring and updated Safari. apple Intelligence is another great feature of macOS Sequoia. It offers features like writing tools and acts as a personal editor that rewrites, proofreads, and summarizes your writing in almost any application you use for writing. Conversations with the updated Siri will also feel more natural, and when ChatGPT is integrated into both Siri and the Writing Tool in December, Apple Intelligence will be even more useful.
The new iMac M4 is currently available for pre-order on Apple's website, starting at $1,299, and will begin shipping on November 8. This model is available in the aforementioned colors and features an M4 chip with an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.
An iMac with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU is also available starting at $1,499. This model also starts with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but can be upgraded up to 32GB and 2TB, respectively. All configurations come with a color-matched Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.
