Google is finally bringing one of its most popular Workspace Gmail app features to desktop users.

Google has been working to improve the way people write emails, with a particular focus on mobile users. One of the best features of the recently released Gmail app is Help me write, which uses AI to write emails. Recently, Help me write has been improved with improved shortcuts. However, the desktop version of the app curiously lacked these features, but that seems to be changing.

Google recently announced on the Workspace Update Blog (via Android Police) that it is bringing the Help me write shortcut to the web browser. Google also announced the introduction of a new “Polish” option for both web and mobile. Upon further investigation, it appears that Polish is simply the new name for “Refine Drafts” and will appear on drafts of 12 or more words. When this option becomes available, you can press the shortcut key (CTRL+H) to see a refined version of your email.

The new refinement feature will also be available in the mobile app alongside Help me write and will replace the Refine my draft feature. For now, drafts of 12 words or more will display a Polish shortcut just below the text, which can be swiped to quickly view a more refined version of the email. From there, users can tap on the refinement tip to edit the draft, make it more formal, elaborate on a point, or make it shorter.

Google is working to improve all elements of the Gmail user experience, including the iPhone. It was recently reported that the iOS Gmail app will support Gemini before Apple Intelligence, a surprise at the time, even though the Gemini feature was locked behind workspace accounts.

Gmail is arguably one of the best email services available today and is used by millions of people worldwide. It should be noted, however, that the new features require the Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on, the Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on, or the Google One AI Premium add-on.
