Two new rumors about the OnePlus Open 2 promise big changes coming to the future foldable's battery and charging system.
According to an article posted on Weibo by veteran leaker Digital Chat Station, the OnePlus Open 2 could add wireless charging, something the original OnePlus Open lacked. This is probably the only feature that the Open lacks that rivals Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold have, so adding it would reinforce OnePlus' lead in the foldable market.
The other major upgrade DCS has suggested for the Open 2 is a battery capacity of 5,700 mAh, up from the Open's 4,805 mAh. given that the OnePlus Open already beats Samsung and Google in battery life, a nearly 900mAh increase may not be necessary, but the closer the foldable phone's life to that of a regular phone, the better.
5,700mAh is a lot of battery, but not the 6,000mAh battery that earlier leaks by DCS promised for the Open 2. Nevertheless, the non-folding OnePlus 13 itself is said to be upgraded to a 6,000 mAh battery, so there may have been some miscommunication with DCS's sources.
Beyond these new claims, we also see that the OnePlus Open 2 should also be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, three 50MP cameras on the back and a large screen. The new foldable could also use some sort of customized USB-C port, but there is no word on exactly what this means.
Despite all these upgrades, the OnePlus Open 2 is also rumored to be less than 10 mm thick when folded. While it will still be noticeably heavier than a standard smartphone, the reduced thickness will make the foldable version easier to carry in a pocket and reduce the burden on the user in exchange for the option of two screens.
The OnePlus Open 2 is reportedly supposed to launch in early 2025, rather than this fall, a year after the first Open appeared; it would be unfortunate if the Open 2 launches later than expected, as the Open 2 is expected to be a bit more expensive than the Open 2, and the Open Open 2 is expected to be a bit more expensive than the Open 2. However, the OnePlus Open remains at the top of our Best Folding Phones guide despite its younger competition, so we have high hopes that the Open 2 will reach even higher levels no matter when it arrives.
