Apple's week of Mac announcements continued today with the news that the Mac mini has been redesigned and now features the company's M4 chip and a new M4 Pro chip, complete with turbocharger.
The new Mac mini M4 will be up to 1.8 times faster in CPU performance and up to 2.2 times faster in GPU performance compared to the Mac mini M1, despite its even smaller size of only 5 x 5 inches, according to Apple. This new smaller Mac is also built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence.
At the same time, the Mac mini M4 is Apple's first carbon-neutral Mac, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 80% in materials, manufacturing, transportation, and customer use.
In addition to the design changes and the addition of an M4 or M4 Pro chip, the biggest difference in this new Mac mini is in the ports: as rumored in September, the Mac mini M4 adds both front and rear ports, not USB-A ports like the Mac mini M2, All have been replaced with Thunderbolt ports. However, while the standard Mac mini M4 has Thunderbolt 4 ports, the Mac mini M4 Pro has Thunderbolt 5 for the first time in Mac history. [The front of the Mac mini M4 has two Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack, while the back has three Thunderbolt ports, an HDMI port, an Ethernet jack, and an AC port. Apple has updated accessories such as the Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad, so the addition of these USB-C ports makes a lot of sense. [The Mac mini M4 starts at $599 and the Mac mini M4 Pro starts at $1,399. Both of these new Macs are available for pre-order starting today at Apple Store applications in 28 countries and regions. These new Mac minis will begin shipping on Friday, November 8.
