Google Pixel 9a Leak Reveals Bigger, Faster, More Efficient Mid-Range Smartphone

Google's mid-range Pixel 9a won't launch until next March, but thanks to a large amount of leaked information, we have a pretty good idea of what to expect from next year's device A new report from Android Headlines confirms what we already confirms the information we covered and combines some spec leaks that appear to introduce some new specs.

To start, the Pixel 9a will have a larger display, 6.3 inches, the same size as the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, up from 6.1 inches on the Pixel 8a. The display should adapt at 120 Hz. This means it will be larger at 154.7 x 73.3 x 8.9 mm, slightly taller and wider than the Pixel 8a's 152.1 x 72.7 x 8.9 mm.

Surprisingly, Google shaved a few grams off the Pixel 9a's weight, bringing it to 186g compared to 188g for Google's mid-range this year.

Not surprisingly, the Pixel 9a is expected to be powered by the Tensor G4 processor introduced in the main Pixel 9 lineup in August. Here, the 9a will see a slight downgrade compared to the Pixel 9, as it will have 8GB of RAM instead of 12GB like the Pixel 9. Storage will be available in 128GB and 256GB.

The larger size means that it will have a 5000mAh battery, much larger than the Pixel 8a's 4492mAh capacity. However, according to reports, charging speeds will remain at 18W wired charging and 7.5 wireless charging.

The Pixel 9a has long been claimed to have a 48MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide, and a 13MP front camera; Android Headline's report seems to confirm these numbers.

For the past three years, Google has announced a series of a phones at Google I/O in May. However, according to multiple rumors, Google will begin taking reservations for the Pixel 9a in mid-March 2025. This could mean that Google will forgo announcing new hardware at next year's I/O conference.

Android Headlines claims that the Pixel 9a will have the same starting price as the 8a, starting at $499, $300 less than the Pixel 9.

The Pixel 9 is already comparable to its own Pro variant, and it increasingly looks like the Pixel 9a, even with some slight downgrades, would be worth considering compared to the mainline Pixel phones.
