Apple's App Store may soon use Apple Intelligence to summarize app reviews.
Apple recently released iOS 18.1, and with it came several Apple Intelligence features mentioned at Apple's WWDC One of Apple Intelligence's capabilities is to summarize text and notifications in an easy-to-read manner. 9to5 Mac recently reported that AI summarization may be coming to the App Store.
According to an unpublished article on the App Store, Apple has developed a new system that uses all user reviews on the App Store to create a summary. This summary will highlight the most common customer feedback about each app and will be updated as new reviews are added. Unfortunately, it is not clear exactly what this summary will look like.
According to the report, Apple will create these summaries online rather than on the device. This is likely Apple's intention for quality control purposes, allowing developers to report AI summaries that do not accurately represent their products. The summaries will reportedly only appear when an app has received a certain number of reviews and will be available in “some countries,” but no details on when this will begin are available.
Note that Amazon already has such a feature, with the site providing a summary of reviews for each product. This summary also includes links to each approved feature. Presumably, the Apple version will be similar to Amazon's “Testimonials,” at least in appearance.
Theoretically, the summary could include game graphics, cost performance, number of in-app ads, etc. [Apple Intelligence brings more than a summary, and Siri has received a visual overhaul. New features like Magic Eraser and Writing Tools have also been added to allow for better writing. However, many of the features promised in Apple Intelligence, such as Genmoji, will not be available until the iOS 18.2 update in December; users in the EU will also have to wait a while, and most features will not be available until April 2025 due to digital market laws.
The ability to see a summary of reviews would make app selection easier, but it remains to be seen if that will be possible; we can only hope it will be, as the iPhone remains one of the best phones out there.
